Chiariamo subito: l'esistenza di tale documento è controversa ("the controversial memorandum"). All'indomani dell'11 Settembre 2001, la CCC (Clear Channel Conglomeration) avrebbe spedito alle oltre 1200 radio possedute una lista nera con più di cento canzoni di cui si sconsigliava la trasmissione (perché inappropriate etc etc). Una circolare ad uso interno, la cui realtà, non positivamente provata, è, tuttavia, largamente plausibile alla luce di un contesto giocato su toni isterico-nazionalisti come quello del dopo 11 Settembre.  

I proscritti maggiori sono i Rage Against the Machine di Zack de la Rocha (qualsiasi canzone!), a ruota AC/DC, Metallica, Alice in Chains, Beatles, Elton John, Soundgarden ...

Vengono additati brani con riferimenti al fuoco (bruciare, roghi, inferno ...), al sangue, alle pallottole, ad esplosioni o spari, alla violenza in generale; alla disperazione e alla depressione; al volo, alla caduta, ai crolli e al salto (in riferimento ai poveracci che si gettarono per trovare scampo); al Medio Oriente (Walk like an Egyptian e Rock the Casbah!). Una casistica che, a primo approccio, può sembrare semplicistica, ma che, invece, operò censurando propri i riferimenti più immediati, quelli che vellicano l'ascoltatore in pieno travaglio emozionale - l'ascoltatore che ragiona con lo stomaco affidandosi ai peggiori angeli della propria anima.

Una curiosità: una delle canzoni sconsigliate è American pie di Don McLean. Undici anni dopo, in Afghanistan, una delle centrali della civiltà indoeuropea*, un soldato americano, canticchiando Bye bye American pie, incenerirà alcuni pericolosi contadini con un missile aria-terra.
