Il 4 Agosto 1958 (31^ settimana dell'anno) entrò in vigore la classifica Hot 100 di Billboard. Ricky Nelson, con Poor little fool, fu il singolo numero 1, per copie vendute e numero di trasmissioni alla radio. Una delle tante classifiche di Billboard, rivista americana per un popolo affascinato dalle statistiche (e dalla manipolazione statistica della realtà).

Le classifiche Billboard mi affascinano per due motivi.

Il primo: il rock, anche latamente inteso, come si evince dalle prime tre annate, non è una musica popolare; esso nasce, anche nelle sue manifestazioni più facili, da una mediazione intellettuale, dalla rielaborazione di stili pregressi e dalla capacità d'inglobare istanze artistiche disparate, dai movimenti d'avanguardia al midcult fumettistico e pulp. Il rock, insomma, è un fenomeno nato in America, ma in contrasto con le pulsioni della maggioranza puritana e silenziosa, devota al paternalismo country, al melodismo perbenista e all'esaltazione della bandiera (secondo un nazionalismo feroce, ma genuino e sorgivo).

Il secondo: ascoltare in serie tali singoli equivale, quindi, ad ascoltare la colonna sonora epocale d'una nazione che, sino al 1973 circa, scorre quasi parallela all'incrudimento del conflitto vietnamita (i primi caduti americani risalgono all'8 Luglio 1959);  una dialettica che rende plastica l'opposizione fra un blocco sociale geneticamente tradizionalista, ben rappresentato da tali numeri uno, e una minoranza che, dai Sessanta ai Settanta, pur alimentando un immaginario collettivo dal potente afflato libertario, verrà inesorabilmente sconfitta.

Le successive decadi turbocapitaliste, da Reagan al clintonismo, non furono che manifestazioni di tale carattere profondo della nazione che reclamerà, dagli Ottanta ai Novanta, i  propri eroi novelli, da Michael Jackson a Mariah Carey.
